![]() ![]() ![]() Robert Baratheon may well be defined as what Robert of Artois would have ended being if he had succeeded to take revenge against his aunt and to become count of Artois, losing his main motivation in life. Tall and strong, member of the royal family, dispossessed of his birthright by his haunt and obsessed with his claim on his father county, both charismatic leader and machiavelian schemer, but also a heavy drinker, whomanizer and familiar with whores, and enjoying the company of mercenaries, thieves and petty knights more than the high nobility, he is a too rich character to be resumed by one Asoiaf equivalent, but there are definitively elements of him in both Robert Baratheon and Tyrion. ![]() One of the characters I link the most with Asoiaf ones is Robert of Artois, the main protagonist of the Accursed Kings. ![]() ( Spoilers warning : the following may reveal some parts of Accursed Kings serie) While Asoiaf story may be seen as more inspired by the War of the Roses, many characters have things in common with Druon's. I'll start with the historical serie Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon, as it's one of my favorite serie and one Martin often listed as one of his favorite historical series. It has probably already been done in particular characters/themas analysis, but as I don't find many threads about Martin's characters sources of inspiration and allusions to other books in their descriptions or behavior. ![]()
